Pepernoten: sugar and spice and all things nice
Families celebrate Sinterklaas’ feast by singing songs, unwrapping presents and indulging in a feast of sugar and spice and all things nice.
One of these yummy treats is ‘pepernoten’. These traditional small round cookies are a treat to kids and adults alike. Zwarte Piet has them in his gunny sack and scatters the pepernoten around or hands them to kids who have been sweet.
Baking them at home is so much fun, the kids simply love to knead the dough and can help roll the dough into little balls. The smell (while baking) is amazing and truly mouth-watering!
So gather the children around the table and have fun making this classic Sinterklaas treat.
• 250g self-raising flour
• 125g soft brown sugar
• 100g butter or margarine
• 50ml milk
• 2 tbsp spice mix for speculaas
• pinch of salt
1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius / Gas 4. Line a baking tray with a parchment paper sheet.
2. In a large bowl, beat butter with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Mix in flour, brown sugar, spice mix, salt and milk. Knead (by hand, or with electric mixer using the dough hook) until the mixture has combined.
3. Roll into small balls (about 1.5 cm) and arrange on baking tray, leaving a little space in between each one.
4. Bake for about 15 minutes in preheated oven until browned. Cool on the baking tray.
